But What If I Was Dying?

The Origin Story I Wish I Had
I’d love to say that ever since I was a young boy, I dreamed of using technology to improve hospital efficiency and elevate the patient experience. It would make for a clean, inspirational origin story.

But that’s not how it happened.

My real journey started in a hospital bed.

A Routine Hospital Stay… Until It Wasn’t
I was a recent college graduate and a patient at my local hospital, which is a beautiful, award‑winning, Magnet‑recognized facility with an exceptional clinical team. The doctors and nurses were outstanding, and I felt genuinely cared for.

Like every patient, I was told that if I needed anything, I could press the red button on the pillow speaker. I never did. I saved that red button for what I imagined would be a true emergency.

Then it happened.

My IV pump started beeping. At the same moment, I noticed an air bubble in the line. I remembered hearing somewhere that an air bubble in an IV could be deadly. Suddenly, my heart was racing. With “death at my door”, or so I thought, I finally pressed the red button.

And then I waited.
And waited.
And waited.

The Moment That Changed Everything
Eventually, my nurse came in, calmly pressed a button to silence the pump, and reassured me she’d be back soon to replace the IV. What I thought was a life‑threatening emergency was, in reality, a routine situation: the IV was simply running low.

As I settled down from my self‑inflicted panic, a question stuck with me:

But what if I was dying?

I knew this hospital was excellent. I knew the staff was exceptional. So why did it take so long for help to arrive?

They weren’t the problem.
The process was.

From Patient to Problem‑Solver
Three months later, I found myself in my first post‑college job, helping hospitals improve this exact workflow. Over the years, I’ve learned that there’s more than one way to fix this process and more than one technology that can support it.

It’s a challenge I’ve come to love, and it’s the foundation of the work I do today.

Why This Story Still Matters
Patient safety isn’t just about clinical expertise. It’s about communication, workflow, and the systems that support caregivers. Even the best hospitals can be held back by outdated processes.
That day in the hospital didn’t just scare me , it shaped my mission.
It’s why I’m committed to helping healthcare organizations modernize the patient experience, streamline communication, and ensure that when a patient does need help, the right person knows immediately.
